What an Energy Saving Light Bulb is and Why to Use It
By: Ryan Narendra
With everyone making the move to
use energy more efficiently, people are even changing the type of light bulbs they use. The newer
energy saving light bulb that is being sold today gives light more efficiently energy wise, last longer, which saves you money. The old incandescent light bulbs that we have been using for a long time take a lot of energy to shine because they use heat generation to work. But a lot of people still don't know what these new
energy saving light bulb are or which ones to buy. Let's look deeper into these and uncover what types there are.
One kind of an
energy saving light bulb that can be seen more widely today is the CFL (compact fluorescent lamp). These are just smaller versions of the long-style fluorescent bulbs that we have seen for years. The CFL bulbs can be used in place of the incandescent bulbs.
They give about the same amount of light as the incandescent ones do. The CFL ones though normally take less energy to work, last much longer as we have said, and are priced a bit higher. But since you don't have to replace them as often the price evens out.
Compared to the incandescent bulbs the CFL can cost you $30
less in cost of electricity over the bulb's life, when compared to what the incandescent bulbs cost to light up. These CFL bulbs also
save on greenhouse gases in the amount of 2,000 times their own weight. All the CFL bulbs and the long tube-like fluorescent lights contain some quantity of mercury which means you have to take special care in disposing of them. This type of light still makes a good energy saving light bulb though.
Another energy saving light bulb is the LED bulb. The LED stands for light-emitting diode. LED bulbs are very energy efficient. Once these were limited to being used as a single bulb but today you can even find Christmas lights with LED bulbs. Multiple bulbs are even put together in flashlight units. Further advancements in technology are bringing the prices down too.
There are many benefits in using the LED bulbs over the incandescent bulbs and the CFL bulbs. They do not get damaged like the incandescent bulbs can, because they have no filament to damage, LED bulbs are solid. That means they hold up to rougher treatment.
LED bulbs not only last longer than the incandescent ones, they even last about 10 times longer than the CFL bulbs do. These bulbs stay cooler that the incandescent ones too. This helps to keep excess heat from being put into your house in the summer when you are trying to keep the house cool.
The LEDs have no mercury in them, which makes disposal easier than with the CFL ones. These bulbs are more efficient because they take only about 2 to 10 electrical watts to operate, which is quite a bit less than both the CFL or incandescent bulbs require. These LED bulbs last for several years, which cuts down on the replacement cost too.
These are just a few reasons why both the CFL and the LED bulbs are better than the incandescent bulbs. Try one of them today and see how using an energy saving light bulb can benefit you.
