Solar Energy Education and What it Teaches You
By: Ryan Narendra
Our first
solar energy education comes when we are young. We have all been out in the sun and felt its warmth. That is
the energy of the sun coming down to warm our planet. The earth would be a cold place to live without the sun!
But there is more we can use the sun for than just warming the planet. We can use it to heat our homes,
generate electricity and to heat our water that we use. This is called solar energy.
All these uses of solar energy cost us less than if we used the traditional methods of generating electricity that depend on fossil fuels.
With today's high cost of heating fuels and electricity, it is more important than ever that we get a
solar energy education. It is the way of the future as far as
renewable energies go. The sun is not going anywhere.
It is free to use other than setting up the equipment to collect its power and converting to a form we can use.
We collect the sun's power with either
solar panels or photovoltaic cells to convert it. The solar panels are installed on buildings and houses and
can be used to generate electricity for them. Many people are starting to use the solar panels for their
home power needs.
The photovoltaic cells are what you find in calculators for one thing. These cells directly convert the sun's light into electricity. The cells can be used in places where solar panels would be too large for the job. This is another part of a
solar energy education that we need to understand.
Basically, there is a both active and
passive form of solar energy. The active kind is that of using the PV cells or solar panels to collect the sun's light and energy to serve our energy needs. The passive kind is building houses and other structures so that their windows or a wall faces the southern sky where the sun can be let into warm the houses or buildings. We can use both forms together to provide our homes and other structures heat and light. We can also have the power to run our TVs and appliances.
A solar energy education also teaches us that we still need to work on conserving the energy we use. Just because we change to solar power doesn't mean that we can use an excess of energy. The more conservation methods we use the better the solar energy will work for us.
We can also use solar energy to heat our swimming pools, run our calculators, and charge our cell phones. All of these uses also help to preserve our resources. It also
saves us money on things like batteries too. Solar is definitely a power source to be considered.
This is just some of what a solar energy education teaches us. There is much more for us to learn to be able to switch totally to solar. On the Internet and at the libraries we can find more in-depth information. We need to keep educating ourselves further on all sorts of
alternative energy sources if we are to survive into the future.
